30 June 2014 brought in a major update to the legislation on flexible working. Up until now, the right to request flexible working has only been the privilege of working parents to request an adjustment of their working arrangements to look after their children. There were set guidelines for how to request and how the request should be dealt with by employers.
The legislation was amended a number of times to cover older children and also dependant adults. The current legislation is considered by some to be a complete overhaul.

On the 6th April 2014, further new measures have been introduced by the Government in an endeavour to reduce the demands on the Employment Tribunal Service. The tribunal service costs £74 million per annum to run, and the Government believes it is reasonable to expect users to contribute to its running costs.

Managing Sickness Absence - The Benefits

We were prompted to write this blog to give some advice on the benefits of handling sickness absence. If left unchecked, sickness absence can really leak profits out of the business. A client recently sought advice about when it would be appropriate to seek an employee’s consent to obtain a medical assessment. In this particular case, the employee had had about five instances of absence over a six-month period. The employer was concerned about this trend, quite naturally. It was entirely appropriate to seek a medical opinion.
